Peggy,
I
have been an organist for over
30 years and have had the
opportunity to play many
different types and styles of
organs. The organ I have been
playing as of recent was a pipe
organ. When we decided to begin
looking at console replacements,
my first inclination was to
replace it as a pipe console. I
have always felt the pipe organ
to be the masterpiece instrument
and felt the pipe sounds were
superior to the sound of any
other type.
As
we began researching the
options, it became apparent that
technology had advanced faster
than my understanding of it! I
was amazed to find an organ that
could combine the sounds of the
pipes and the digital sounds to
create a well-orchestrated sound
and the pipe organ sound did not
go away. I was also amazed at
the extensive range of sounds
that I, as the artist at the
organ, could create. With our
new console, I fully enjoy the
sound of the full pipe organ as
I play service music and other.
However, I also have completely
enjoyed having the many digital
sounds that are now at my
disposal. The congregation has
loved the solo by the cello or
the saxophone….they have also
been amazed by the eerie sound
of the “men’s choir” that came
in on the antiphonal speakers
during the playing of my prelude
(O
Sacred Head Now Wounded )
on Good Friday.
I
continue to learn the vast
amount of options I have with
this organ! It has enhanced my
appreciation of the “art of
music”. I am grateful that my
congregation supported the
purchase of such an instrument!
